TBR Lows and Highs #5

TBR Lows and Highs

I’ve seen a bunch of variations on this idea, but I like this one the most. Plus I love Destiny at Howling Libraries, who created this prompt, check her out, she is amazing. I love reading her posts every week, so I finally decided to join in. I have a ridiculously long TBR and will probably concentrate more on the highs.

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
    • ALTERNATIVE OPTION: Find 5+ titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now! (Thank you for this idea, Ari!)
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

As a part of Tidyathon I decided that I would remove 15 titles every week instead of 5.

The Lows

Pointe by Brandy Colbert

I don’t read many contemporary novels, but when I do I would read something more popular than this one. It sounds pretty good, but I’m probably not going to read it.

The Paradox Initiative by Alydia Rackham

This one also sounds pretty good, but I don’t really like time travel novels. Once again it sounds alright, but I am probably not going to read it.

Beauty Queen by Linda Glovach

This is another one that sounds like something I would read. The reviews from my friends aren’t very good though. I’d probably never actually read this.

Ryder’s Redemption by J.A. Templeton

Bad boy NA novel with only 7 reviews. Sounds promising, but it’s unlikely that I will ever actually read it.

Missing Pieces by Nicola Haken

Shirtless guy on the cover = does not belong on my TBR.

Rook by J.C. Andrijeski

Got pretty bad reviews from my friends and I hate the cover.

Limbus Inc. – An Anthology

I am SUPER selective about anthologies. I hardly ever read them, and I’m not going to read this one.

Obsession by JoAnne Keltner

I hate this cover and it doesn’t sound too interesting to me. It has gotten great reviews though, so who knows? I’m not going to find out though.

A Wonderful World : The End of Times

Only 3 reviews, but it does sound kind of interesting. I can see why this was on my TBR, but I’m not going to pick it up.

Unfiltered and Unlawful by Payge Galvin, Ronnie Douglas, Melissa Marr

Another shirtless man on the cover. Byeeee. Also, why is Melissa Marr listed as an author, but not on the cover? Weird.

Broken Beauty by Chloe Adams and Lizzy Ford

This is about the aftermath of rape. While I’m not COMPLETELY opposed to a book that contains that, I don’t want to read a book exclusively about it.

A Lasting Impression by Tamera Alexander

I typically don’t read pure historical romance novels. I have no idea why this is on my TBR.

The Blood of The Black Rose by Stephanie Collier

Now I can see why this was on my TBR. It’s about vampires and has a gypsy curse. But with so few reviews I’m never going to read it. There are so many other books about vampires that I could read.

Klay by Regina Bartley

This looks like an NA novel that is basically all smut. Nope.

Sapphire and Me by Anfal Khaliq

Okay first off the girl is described to be “no beauty” but the girl on the cover is gorgeous. But also it sounds like a book all about being the victim. NOPE.

The Highs

Since I am sharing so many lows, I might as well a bunch of highs too! Since that’s what people really want to see!

Academy Bloodstone by Henry Taygar

I got a review copy of this via Librarything! It’s gotten great reviews so far. Hoping this is a hidden gem!

The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano

This looks amazing and I can’t believe that it wasn’t on my TBR.

Stolen Time by Danielle Rollins

I got a copy from Edelweiss. I am really excited for this one!

Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill

This looks good, but has gotten mixed reviews. I’m not super sure about this one.

The Antidote by Shelley Sackier

This is another book I got from Edelweiss. I’m pretty sure they compared it to Laini Taylor’s books. It sounds great, forbidden magic and a prince in danger.

Saving Meghan by D.J. Palmer

This is about a daughter and her mother has Munchausen syndrome by proxy and is treating her daughter for an illness that she doesn’t have. I got a physical copy in the mail and can’t wait to read it.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

This looks like a great middle grade novel that I should really check out. I have been pretty biased against reading middle grade novels, but sometimes they are great to get you out of a slump.

We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlett

This upcoming YA fantasy looks AMAZING. It doesn’t come out until April, but is definitely on my TBR.

The Beholder by Anna Bright

A mash up of Cinderella and The Odyssey? I have to see how that turns out!

The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork

I LOVE Heather Dixon’s Illusionarium, so I had to check this out. Plus it’s the perfect season to read a nutcracker re-telling.

Toads and Diamonds by Heather Tomlinson

This is a retelling that is diverse and apparently really captures the culture. This review totally talked me into reading it.

The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley

A Beowulf re-telling! I had such high hopes for The Boneless Mercies, but re-telling wise was a little disappointed.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

I’m sold just based on the cover alone.

Final Life by Rose Garcia

I believe this was a freebie that I got by signing up for a newsletter. This one looks great.

V Games by Caroline Peckham

This looks great. I got this as a freebie as well and it’s one of my free reads that I’m most excited about.

Do you want to read any of these titles? Have you already read some of them? Are there any that you’re going to add to your TBR now? Are there any titles that are on my low list that I should keep? Do you have a never ending TBR mountain as well? Don’t forget to comment below!

  1. I like these posts. I’ve found a few books I might never have heard of without your ‘Lows & Highs’ lists. Beowulf reimaginings never get old. Have you ever read “Grendel” by John Gardner?

That said, I’m painfully aware I might see my own book on your lows list one of these days. *laughing*

    1. Your book won’t wind up on my low list! I try to give everything a chance, but I’m trying to look at books that I will realistically read or not.

I am looking up Grendel right now, because I haven’t read it!

      1. I think the copy I sent you was printed before I fired my editor. Uh-oh.
If you’ve never read anything by John Gardner (not to add to your TBR list or anything), I’d recommend Grendel, In the Suicide Mountains and a book of short stories titled Dragon, Dragon. His writing is clever and funny.

      2. I can’t wait to get to your book. I am looking up all of those titles. I have to do this post because I do add to my TBR super easily. I would rather have a book on there if there is a chance that I might read it or if I should check it out. But the thing is when I created my account I added a lot of books I wouldn’t read. I never thought I would have anything to take off, but when I go through my TBR I find a bunch of books that I won’t read.

      3. Remember…I’m sending you another copy.
I had to dump my editor and re-edit on my own. I have plenty of professional experience at being a copy editor, but I outsourced my own book. This turned out to be a mistake.
Once I dug in it was even worse than I thought, but it’s all done now.
I think I’ll stick to being my own editor from now on.

  2. The Glass Spare looks good. I haven’t read anything from her in a while. Also Nevermoor looks intriguing. I don’t read much middle grade, but maybe I should.
