Top 5 Book Recommendation Series
This Top 5 series started back in October and I kind of lost motivation for making it every week. But it’s back! This is a series of books that I want to read that all have a common theme. Previously on the blog I have focused on witches, werewolves, thrillers and faeries.
This week I wanted to focus on Fairy Tale Re-tellings
When I was a kid my mom used to read Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales as bedtime stories to my sister and I. We have this gorgeous giant red book full of old fairy tales that is full of beautiful stories that inspired many longer versions of fairy tales. I grew up on Disney films and have become a lover of the fantasy genre that has roots in many of these tales.
Fairy tale re-tellings have become quite popular lately, so I wanted to share the top five re-tellings on my TBR list. It was EXTREMELY hard to narrow this list down to 5 books.
The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury
An Aladdin re-telling with a female jinni. The beautiful cover with a recommendation from Sarah J Maas along with all of the stunning reviews, this is one book that I would love to get my hands on.
Second Star by Alyssa B. Shienmel
This retelling is a little bit different than the rest on the list. This is a contemporary version of Peter Pan written by Alyssa B. Shienmel. I just read A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B Shienmel and promised myself that I would return to her writing.
A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and so far it has gotten rave reviews. It is supposedly a bit darker than the original tale, which is exactly why I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
This one is a Little Mermaid retelling, but with sirens rather than mermaids. WHICH IS HOW IT SHOULD BE! I have heard mixed reviews on this one though, but I absolutely LOVE sirens.
Twisted Tales Series by Liz Braswell
Last but not least, I wanted to mention this series which has been on my TBR forever. Each book is a retelling of a different fairy tale and they all look amazing. These stories are based on the Disney versions of the tales, but explore what would happen if a key point in the films turned out a bit different. These fractured fairy tales are sure to be interesting.

I really enjoyed A Tale as Old as Time and To Kill a Kingdom! I wasn’t a huge fan of A Curse so Dark and Lonely but I still liked it. Great post!

I am currently waiting on a copy of The Shadow Queen which is a retelling that has been at the top of my TBR since Christmas! But this list is all books that I don’t have copies of, but want to read. You should make a list of your top 5 retellings! I’d love to see what you would put on it!

Thanks for tagging me, Amanda! This list looks amazing, and at least two of these are already on my TBR!! But I kind of don’t know a lot of fairytale retellings 😂

I hope that you make the list! I’m sure you actually have more on your TBR than you think you do! A lot of books pull their inspiration from fairy tales. ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas is a retelling

I am so glad you shared your thoughts on Forbidden Wish. I just loved the cover, but have heard little from my blogging and reviewing friends, so it’s nice to have someone endorse it.

I’m excited to read a curse so dark and lonely too because I LOVE Beauty and the Beast retellings. Cruel Beauty, The Rose Master, Hunted (loved this one,) and Of Beast and Beauty.

Have you read A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah Maas? It’s also a beauty and the beast re-telling, but I hated that one.

So, based on this post I got ‘As Old As Time’ from the library yesterday, thinking maybe my girls would like it. Y’know, Disney, Beauty & the Beast, YA fiction…
I can’t put the thing down. So good! Great characters, swiftly moving plot, engaging all around.
I’ll have to get all the Twisted Tales for the girls (me).

My favourite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast. I love fairy tale retellings and they are very popular right now! I have just finished Uprooted and absolutely loved it. I haven’t read any off your list yet but I definitely will be soon. I feel really silly that I didn’t know To Kill a Kingdom was a Little Mermaid retelling! It has been sat on my shelf for far too long.

One of my friends picked up the Twisted Tale version of Beauty and the Beast (As Old as Time) at the library based on this post and said they couldn’t put it down! So I would highly recommend that if you love Beauty and the Beast retellings!
I got a copy of The Shadow Queen and didn’t realize it was a re-telling even though it has a picture of an apple on the front cover. I also didn’t realize the rest of the series are stand alone’s that are re-tellings of other stories but set in the same world until after I read the book and realized it couldn’t continue. I looked up the other books and found out. I was surprised lol.

I just read The Shadow Queen and loved it, and now I got approved on Edelweiss for the 4th book in the series and am debating reading it out of order.
