Top 5 Book Recommendation Series

This Top 5 series started back in October and I kind of lost motivation for making it every week. But it’s back! This is a series of books that I want to read that all have a common theme. Previously on the blog I have focused on witches, werewolves, thrillers and faeries.

This week I wanted to focus on Fairy Tale Re-tellings

When I was a kid my mom used to read Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales as bedtime stories to my sister and I. We have this gorgeous giant red book full of old fairy tales that is full of beautiful stories that inspired many longer versions of fairy tales. I grew up on Disney films and have become a lover of the fantasy genre that has roots in many of these tales.

Fairy tale re-tellings have become quite popular lately, so I wanted to share the top five re-tellings on my TBR list. It was EXTREMELY hard to narrow this list down to 5 books.

An Aladdin re-telling with a female jinni. The beautiful cover with a recommendation from Sarah J Maas along with all of the stunning reviews, this is one book that I would love to get my hands on.

This retelling is a little bit different than the rest on the list. This is a contemporary version of Peter Pan written by Alyssa B. Shienmel. I just read A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B Shienmel and promised myself that I would return to her writing.

This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and so far it has gotten rave reviews. It is supposedly a bit darker than the original tale, which is exactly why I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

This one is a Little Mermaid retelling, but with sirens rather than mermaids. WHICH IS HOW IT SHOULD BE! I have heard mixed reviews on this one though, but I absolutely LOVE sirens.

Twisted Tales Series by Liz Braswell

Last but not least, I wanted to mention this series which has been on my TBR forever. Each book is a retelling of a different fairy tale and they all look amazing. These stories are based on the Disney versions of the tales, but explore what would happen if a key point in the films turned out a bit different. These fractured fairy tales are sure to be interesting.

    1. I am currently waiting on a copy of The Shadow Queen which is a retelling that has been at the top of my TBR since Christmas! But this list is all books that I don’t have copies of, but want to read. You should make a list of your top 5 retellings! I’d love to see what you would put on it!

  1. So, based on this post I got ‘As Old As Time’ from the library yesterday, thinking maybe my girls would like it. Y’know, Disney, Beauty & the Beast, YA fiction…
I can’t put the thing down. So good! Great characters, swiftly moving plot, engaging all around.
I’ll have to get all the Twisted Tales for the girls (me).

  2. My favourite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast. I love fairy tale retellings and they are very popular right now! I have just finished Uprooted and absolutely loved it. I haven’t read any off your list yet but I definitely will be soon. I feel really silly that I didn’t know To Kill a Kingdom was a Little Mermaid retelling! It has been sat on my shelf for far too long.

    1. One of my friends picked up the Twisted Tale version of Beauty and the Beast (As Old as Time) at the library based on this post and said they couldn’t put it down! So I would highly recommend that if you love Beauty and the Beast retellings!

I got a copy of The Shadow Queen and didn’t realize it was a re-telling even though it has a picture of an apple on the front cover. I also didn’t realize the rest of the series are stand alone’s that are re-tellings of other stories but set in the same world until after I read the book and realized it couldn’t continue. I looked up the other books and found out. I was surprised lol.

      1. I am glad that they tested it for me! Lol

I just read The Shadow Queen and loved it, and now I got approved on Edelweiss for the 4th book in the series and am debating reading it out of order.
