Top 5 Sequels I Want to Read

Copy of Copy of Copy of Devouring Books.png

This Top 5 series started back in October and I kind of lost motivation for making it every week. But it’s back! This is a series of books that I want to read that all have a common theme. Previously on the blog I have focused on witches, werewolves, thrillers, faeries, fairy tale re-tellings and high fantasy. I am going to try and bring this series back for every Saturday.

The upcoming schedule is:

7/20/19 — Sequels

7/27/19 — Psychological Thrillers

8/3/19 –Books with Asian Settings

8/10/19–Books about Assassins

Sequels

This week was really hard for me to narrow down the choices to only 5 books. I have a LOT of unfinished series that I have started and never finished, and so many of them I really want to continue. Since becoming a book blogger I get a lot of ARCs and I don’t have as much time for back list titles, and that means that I don’t always finish the series that I start. I have a bit of a fear of sequels because a lot of times they suffer from what I call “second-book-syndrome”, meaning that the sequel tends to not be as great as the first book in the series was. I think a lot of authors try and force their stories to become trilogies, when they should really have just been stand alone titles, but at the same time I absolutely love returning to favorite characters and worlds. These are the sequels that I am definitely going to read because I loved the first books so much!

This book is probably the first book I will read out of this list, not only because I actually have a copy, but because I really can’t wait to read it. It’s been a while since I’ve read The Kiss of Deception, but I really loved the world building, and that twist blew me away. I feel like I have been seeing this series everywhere lately, and it’s a series that I really want to catch up on. Check out my review for The Kiss of Deception here.

I absolutely LOVED the dark world of Ace of Shades and tried SO hard to get an ARC of King of Fools. This is one of my favorite worlds, and I can’t wait to return to it. I am a sucker for books about con artists, and Ace of Shades was a 5 star read for me. This is a book that I can’t wait to get my grubby hands on. Check out my review of Ace of Shades here.

As long as we’re talking about books about con artists, we might as well include the sequel to White Cat. The first book in Holly Black’s lesser known Curse Worker’s series is actually the first Holly Black book that I had ever read. I got the second and third books in this series for my birthday, but still have yet to read them.

I recently saw the An Ember in the Ashes series on Kristy’s Book Review’s blog post about under-rated and under-hyped books and it really made me want to return to this series. I feel like people only talk about this series when the next book comes out, but I really loved the first book in the series. I have heard that if I continue the series it will tear my heart out, but that only makes me want to read it even more. Check out my review for An Ember in the Ashes here.

This is another sequel that I tried really hard to get an ARC of, but didn’t. I found Rule to be a fast paced fantasy, and it totally took me out of a reading slump. I loved the story and found it to be a really fun and interesting read. I can’t wait to see what happens next, and return to these characters, which I really loved in the first book. Check out my review of Rule here.

  1. You know, I have seen so much about Ace of Shades, but oddly I have no interest in reading it. I get owlcrate and skipped that renewal session. 3/5 books you have here I either have on my TBR or I have not heard of and now plan to add. I also second you on the An Ember in the Ashes series, such a good series, so under-rated. I actually need to finish it as well! Great Post!

  2. I hope you enjoy King of Fools! It has an awesome girl gang in it that I’m sure you’ll love.
And I need to get around to Red Glove too. White Cat was fun and I’ve heard the series only gets better from there.
I could not put A Torch Against The Night down when I read it. It was so good!

    1. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of King of Fools for a while. I have to place a hold on it on the ebook library. And I can’t wait to finish the Curse Workers series bc White Cat was one of my favorite Holly Black titles. I keep hearing amazing things about A Torch Against the Night and it will probably be one of the first titles I read after I get through some of my ARCs

  3. Oh wow, for the 24in48 Readathon, I just finished Part 2 by a favorite author, Eric Jerome Dickey. It is called Before We Were Wicked. Although it is a part 2, I had no idea until I waa halfway into the book. It can be read as a stand alone. My favorite series is a tie between The Mayfair Witches series and the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

  4. I adored Ace Of Shades too! I loved King Of Fools so much too. I would say it’s definitely as good as the first book. The characters really settle into themselves (for better or worse) and the stakes are raised so much higher!
