Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings based on the meme Waiting on Wednesday by Breaking the Spine. In this weekly post people share a book that they’re excited about being released.

I have always loved reading these posts, looking forward at books that people can’t wait for. But I always find that I want a list and it is just one book. So I decided I would share three books that I can’t wait for. If you click on the title of the book it will take you to the book’s Goodreads page.

The Swallows by Lisa Lutz.jpgThe Swallows by Lisa Lutz

A new teacher at a New England prep school ignites a gender war–with deadly consequences–in a provocative novel from the bestselling author of The Passenger and the Spellman Files series.

What do you love? What do you hate? What do you want?

It starts with this simple writing prompt from Alex Witt, Stonebridge Academy’s new creative writing teacher. When the students’ answers raise disturbing questions of their own, Ms. Witt knows there’s more going on the school than the faculty wants to see. She soon learns about The Ten–the students at the top of the school’s social hierarchy–as well as their connection to something called The Darkroom.

Ms. Witt can’t remain a passive observer. She finds the few girls who’ve started to question the school’s “boys will be boys” attitude and incites a resistance that quickly becomes a movement. But just as it gains momentum, she also attracts the attention of an unknown enemy who knows a little too much about her–including what brought her to Stonebridge in the first place.

Meanwhile, Gemma, a defiant senior, has been plotting her attack for years, waiting for the right moment. Shy loner Norman hates his role in the Darkroom, but can’t find the courage to fight back until he makes an unlikely alliance. And then there’s Finn Ford, an English teacher with a shady reputation who keeps one eye on his literary ambitions and one on Ms. Witt.

As the school’s secrets begin to trickle out, a boys-versus-girls skirmish turns into an all-out war, with deeply personal–and potentially fatal–consequences for everyone involved. Lisa Lutz’s blistering, timely tale shows us what can happen when silence wins out over decency for too long–and why the scariest threat of all might be the idea that sooner or later, girls will be girls.

I have an eARC of this title and although I have been on a huge fantasy kick, I am super excited for this non fantasy title. I feel like it is a perfect fit for in between fantasy reads and am very excited to get to it. It’s set at a New England prep school and a creative writing prompt somehow incites a gender war between the students. I have already heard from reviewers not to take it too seriously, so I won’t, but the subject matter and the setting already have me excited.

The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring.jpg

Simmering in Patagonian myth, The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist.

At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi—a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother—it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina’s elite girls.

Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house—despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi’s ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored.

One of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi’s existence. In order to survive she must solve a cosmic mystery—and then fight for her life.

I am on the blog tour for this title on September 24th and I also have an interview with the author. I absolutely love boarding school settings, and this one is also described as a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist. I love the cover, love the setting and love when horror meets mystery. I can’t wait to read this one! Oh, and did I mention that it’s inspired by Patagonian mythology?

The Orchid Throne by Jeffe KennedyThe Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy

Welcome to the world of Forgotten Empires from award winning author Jeffe Kennedy that begins with The Orchid Throne.

A PRISONER OF FATE

As Queen of the island kingdom of Calanthe, Euthalia will do anything to keep her people free—and her secrets safe—from the mad tyrant who rules the mainland. Guided by a magic ring of her father’s, Lia plays the political game with the cronies the emperor sends to her island. In her heart, she knows that it’s up to her to save herself from her fate as the emperor’s bride. But in her dreams, she sees a man, one with the power to build a better world—a man whose spirit is as strong, and whose passion is as fierce as her own…

A PRINCE AMONG MEN

Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, has built an army to overthrow the emperor. But he needs the fabled Abiding Ring to succeed. The ring that Euthalia holds so dear to her heart. When the two banished rulers meet face to face, neither can deny the flames of rebellion that flicker in their eyes—nor the fires of desire that draw them together. But in this broken world of shattered kingdoms, can they ever really trust each other? Can their fiery alliance defeat the shadows of evil that threaten to engulf their hearts and souls?

So I forgot to write down the dates I had asked to be on blog tours, and somehow I wound up being on the blog tour for this title the same day that I am on the blog tour for The Tenth Girl. Oops! So I guess you guys will get two blog tours in one day! The Orchid Throne is an adult fantasy romance that I am very excited to read. It sounds like it is full of political scheming, forbidden love and magic. I just hope that it lives up to my expectations!

    1. From her goodreads bio it says “Born in Los Angeles, Sara Faring is a multi-lingual Argentine-American.” So that’s really cool! I wouldn’t have thought to check that if you didn’t mention it!

  1. All great picks for the week. I’ll be curious to see what you think of both The Swallows and The Tenth Girl. I read something else by Lisa Lutz (The Passenger, I think?) and really enjoyed it but this seems so different I was hesitant to pick it up.

    1. I just started The Swallows and it seems pretty good so far. I’ve been told not to take it too seriously, because apparently it’s a bit over the top. But I am really liking it so far. I love boarding school settings. I read that she wrote The Passenger, but I don’t think it’s even on my TBR. I do have an ARC of another book called The Passengers, but it’s written by John Marrs and comes out at the end of August.

Funny I just realized that The Tenth Girl also has a boarding school setting, but I’m a little nervous because books that are labeled as horror tend to be a little hit or miss sometimes. I think I’m just trying not to go in with high expectations.
