Assassins

There are a lot of novels about assassins that I’m dying to read. I love morally grey characters, so criminals, thieves and assassins are always fascinating to me. I think assassins tend to be a bit morally dark, which makes them interesting to read about. I read Graceling a while back and absolutely loved it (check out my review), so ever since then I’ve wanted to read more titles about assassins. This prompt is full of titles that I am dying to read and I can’t wait to see everyone else’s recommendations!

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks.jpgThe Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

From New York Times Bestselling author Brent Weeks…
For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city’s most accomplished artist.

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he’s grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly – and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins’ world of dangerous politics and strange magics – and cultivate a flair for death.

When I mentioned to some friends that I really liked Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, they mentioned that I should try out Brent Weeks’ books. Everything that he has written sounds up my alley, but this book sounds totally up my alley. I bought a copy in early June, so I will be able to get to this pretty soon!

The Queen's Assassin by melissa de la cruz.jpgThe Queen’s Assassin by Melissa de la Cruz

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia’s deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he’s the Guild’s most dangerous member and the Queen’s one and only assassin. He’s also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow–to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts–to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she’ll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they’re forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they’ll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they’ll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series.

I have always liked Melissa de la Cruz’s books, but as soon as I even saw this title I knew that I wanted to read this book. A romance between an assassin and an assassin’s apprentice, plus political  intrigue and royal threats, this is a book that I am dying to get my hands on. This book comes out in February of 2020 and I’m going to try to get my hands on an ARC.

Poison Study by Maria V Snyder.jpg

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

I’ve heard amazing things about this series. There are 6 books in this series, so if I wind up loving it I would be able to enjoy the characters and the world for quite a while. This series sounds like something I would love and I really hope that I can get my hands on book one soon.

Age of Assassins by RJ Barker.jpgAge of Assassins by R.J. Barker

To catch an assassin, use an assassin…

Girton Club-foot, apprentice to the land’s best assassin, still has much to learn about the art of taking lives. But his latest mission tasks him and his master with a far more difficult challenge: to save a life. Someone, or many someones, is trying to kill the heir to the throne, and it is up to Girton and his master to uncover the traitor and prevent the prince’s murder.

In a kingdom on the brink of civil war and a castle thick with lies Girton finds friends he never expected, responsibilities he never wanted, and a conspiracy that could destroy an entire kingdom.

I recently read The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker, which comes out in September. I gave the book 5 stars and after reading I wanted to check out his other books. It just so happens that his other series is about assassins! It’s about protecting the prince and uncovering a traitor, and after reading The Bone Ships this series is pretty high on my TBR.

Assassin's Apprentice by Robin HobbAssassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb

In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma.

Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chivalry Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely. Only his magical link with animals – the old art known as the Wit – gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility.

So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and embrace a new life of weaponry, scribing, courtly manners; and how to kill a man secretly, as he trains to become a royal assassin.

I’ve been trying to get into epic fantasy this summer and everyone keeps recommending that I check out Robin Hobb’s books. The Assassin’s Apprentice is about a royal bastard who has a magical connection with animals and trains to become an assassin’s apprentice.

    1. I do different topics every week! I’ve done boarding school settings, asian settings, psychological thrillers, werewolves, fairies and more. It’s not necessarily about genres, but more topics.

It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of people have joined in. There are so many good assassin books out there! I am looking for recommendations for future topics if you have any ideas! Or if you want to participate I’d love to have you!

      1. Cool! I don’t have a specific idea, but I think it would be funny to try and pick something really obscure… and then find ~5 books that fit the guidelines. I’ll always remember a website that reviewed something like “Best post-apocalyptic Australian road movies of 1977” and I was blown away the author found enough examples.

Happy blogging! Will continue to read 🙂

    1. Brent Weeks has another series that I really want to read called Lightbringer I have a copy of the first book called The Black Prism!

I am always looking for more topics, so if you have any ideas I’d love some recs! I have about 20 or 30 more though, so I should be alright for a while! When you start your booktube channel I would love to follow you!!!

      1. Lightbringer is the one that my twin is reading now! He’s dying for the final book to come out. Oh maybe we can do a buddy read for that! I just have to find the first book myself. I think my twin has the kindle version but I’d want the physical copy so I can start taking notes.

Oh yes, I keep thinking about it, so I’ll definitely message you on Twitter or something when I come up with them and lmk if they work. Ahh if I created it I will let you know! I’d love to have you follow us 😀

      2. I would love to watch your youtube channel! I hope that you do it!

Brent Weeks’ Lightbringer series is compared to Mistborn, so of course I have to have it because I loved the first two Mistborn books!! I am really excited to finally get to his books, but I’ve gotta get through my ARCs first. Lightbringer is supposed to have a really cool magic system, so I want to check it out. But The Way of Shadows has assassins and criminals and sounds really cool too. I don’t know which one I will wind up reading first.

  1. Wow, assassins are a big theme in fantasy! I haven’t read any of these, but they sound good.

Assassin’s Apprentice sounds especially good because of the animals and because it sounds well-researched. Fitz- was a prefix used by the Normans to indicate an illegitimate son (so FitzGerald = illegitimate son of Gerald). I learned that from reading a novel that re-imagined Robin Hood during the Norman Conquest.

The classic fantasy series, the Belgariad, has an entire country, Drasnia, that specializes in spies and assassins. At one point the members of the quest are followed for several volumes by a very determined and professional assassin. I think that might happen in the Mallorean, the series that is the sequel to the Belgariad.

    1. Robin Hobb is supposed to be amazing. So cool to hear that fact about illegitimate sons!

I’m looking up the series that you mentioned. The author is David Eddings right? It looks really good, even though it’s a little old. I just love well written epic fantasy! Assassins are so much fun to read about too!

      1. Yes, David Eddings, you got it exactly! Yes, it is definitely an old classic. I’ve heard people say it’s trope-heavy, but that’s actually why I love it. And it has an interesting magic system – “the Will and the Word.” Hope you enjoy!

  2. I never really stopped to think about how many assassins there are in fantasy, though it’s a great genre for them. I’ve been meaning to read Hobb’s books for almost 20 years as I had a friend who raved about them, but I guess 12 year old me wasn’t quite ready. The Bone Ships is on my TBR this month and I can’t wait to read it! I’ve heard some really good things about his books, so I’m excited.

    1. I loved The Bone Ships, I hope you enjoy it as well!
There are a ton of great fantasy assassin novels, I’ve read a bunch already, but want to read so many more!

I think Robin Hobb’s books might have been a little overwhelming at 12 years old, but now maybe you should try them! Assassin’s Apprentice is at the top of my list of Robin Hobb’s titles that I want to read.

  3. Oh I need to check out the way of Shadows and the queen’s assassin! I actually quite enjoy books with assassins haha 🙈

  4. Age of Assassins and Assassin’s Apprentice look really good. I’m going to have to add them to my TBR. I’ve read about the Queen’s Assassin but it sounded like too much romance for me to read. Otherwise, I would have requested the arc because it sounds really good.

    1. Age of Assassins is by RJ Barker and he didn’t have any romance in The Bone Ships, so you might love it. Did you get the Orbit Newsletter? Did you wind up asking for a copy of The Bone Ships?

Have you ever read any Robin Hobb titles? I hear they’re amazing. I am going to start with Assassin’s Apprentice if I can get my hands on a copy.

I agree that The Queen’s Assassin sounds like it may have a lot of romance, but I’ve always like Melissa de la Cruz and I love assassins in books, so hopefully I will like it. The title reminds me of The King’s Questioner, which you know I am SO hype for. I’m more excited for The King’s Questioner than I am for The Queen’s Assassin though.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes. I will have Bone Ships by the end of the month! I have not read Robin Hobb but both of those titles you listed are now on my tbr lol. Yes I am excited for Kings Questioner too (thanks for putting that on my radar lol)

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I can’t wait to see what you think of The Bone Ships! I also can’t wait to read The King’s Questioner. I am so upset! I got denied for The Queen’s Assassin on Edelweiss! I am just going to request again but UGH! I also just got an email saying that I will be getting a copy of The Girl the Sea Gave Back in the mail soon.

      3. I didn’t get The Beautiful…. Uhmmm I honestly can’t think of a title that’s through them right now that I actually have. I’m looking, but I think you’re right and they don’t give out anything to me.

      4. Yeah well wouldnt we all :p. Sometimes we are the windshield. Sometimes we are the bug. Sometimes it varies minute to minute. Sometimes we have no clue how they will react depending on the font size we use. 🤦‍♂️

      5. I only started asking for physical copies like 6 months ago and now I feel like I get a pretty decent amount. I have either eARCs or physicals of almost every book that I really want to read. Except Queen of Nothing and Ninth House of course. There are a few besides those two that I don’t have, but most everything I really wanted I wound up getting.

        Liked by 1 person

    1. The Queen’s Assassin doesn’t come out until February, so I’m going to try to get an ARC, if you really want one you should ask for one too!

I would love to see your list or to have you join me every week. Obviously no pressure, but it’s been a lot of fun so far!
