Evernight

2722413Summary: Bianca wants to escape.

She’s been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn’t fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He’s not the “Evernight type” either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

“I couldn’t stand it if they took it out on you,” he tells Bianca, “and eventually they would.”

But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can’t be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she’s ever believed.

Review: 3 stars

This book moves pretty quickly. It is paced okay, but it does slow up and get a little boring in the middle, but then it picks up again. I really don’t feel like it has much of a plot, it really focuses on more character development than action. This book sat on my shelf for years before I finally read it. It was just kind of mediocre, the kind of book that you could forget reading. It isn’t very original and the main characters had less personality than the supporting characters. This isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy reading it, but it just fell kind of flat.

There are a few good twists that caught me off guard. It wasn’t extremely predictable. I have heard that this is the worst book of the series though, which is unusual because a lot of sequels suffer from the dreaded second-book-syndrome. Apparently the second book is better than the first. I can see how that could happen, as this book did set up a world where a lot of cool things could happen. It has potential, unfortunately for the first one, it didn’t quite measure up.

I’m glad that I read it though. The ending was pretty good and I’m a sucker for books that take place in boarding schools. Something about that idea intrigues me. I would read the rest of the series, but I’m not exactly about to go seeking them out. If I come across them I would pick them up though. I just wish that there was more of a plot and that this was less of a contemporary romance novel. But if you love romance in supernatural worlds, this is the book for you. Personally I like a bit more action in my books.
